Azerbaijan’s rich musical art has developed over millennia, undergoing a long and
remarkable evolution. The earliest information about Azerbaijani music has been
obtained from archaeological findings, including the rock carvings of Gobustan (18th–3rd millennia BCE) and Gamigaya (3rd–1st millennia BCE).
During the Middle Ages, Azerbaijani music continued to flourish. The epic “Kitabi-Dada
Gorgud” (7th century) contains references to musical gatherings, the art of the ozan, and
the qopuz instrument. Great poets such as Nizami Ganjavi and Muhammad Fuzuli wrote
about the profound influence of music on the human soul, various musical genres, and
instruments. Music is a unique medium capable of touching the human spirit and
influencing it in many different ways.
